West Siders are Historically Grassroots Activists



More than 100 years ago West Siders organized a rally that more than 5,000 people attended to protest the addition of "electrical rails" on Amsterdam Avenue. The NY Times article is interesting in that it provides historical context for west side urban development, activism and even progress in the area of womens rights -- the article makes mention that "It was also remarkable for the presence of hundreds of women." and "The novelty of a woman speaker seemed to please the audience greatly." We West Siders were simply radical then...weren't we? (smile)
