The state's lotto game may have a bigger jackpot, but the city's affordable housing lotteries offer Bronx residents much better odds.

A record number of affordable-housing lotteries are open and accepting applications, according to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development. Of the 566 lottery units available in the city, 320 are in the Bronx. "This record number of open lotteries shows the progress we are making on realizing Mayor Bloomberg's historic commitment to build and preserve enough affordable housing for 500,000 people - more than the population of Atlanta," said HPD Commissioner Shaun Donovan.

Bloomberg's $7.5 billion, 10-year, 165,000-unit plan is the largest municipal affordable-housing plan in the nation's history. All of the new and renovated affordable housing is sold or rented through an open-lottery system to eligible applicants. The borough's offerings are clustered in the southwest Bronx, and strong preference is given to local applicants. The locations include: # 99 units at 950 Westchester Ave. in Longwood. # 85 units at 1211 Southern Blvd. in Crotona Park. # 34 units at 1138 Washington Ave. in Morrisania. # 32 units at 2732 Marion Ave. in Fordham. # 31 units in Wales Cluster Apartments at 753 E. 151st St. and 627 Wales Ave. in Melrose.

Application deadlines for the Bronx properties run to early next year - the Westchester Ave. site deadline is Jan. 7. The Nov. 15 application deadline for 39 units at 830 Fox St., in Longwood, has passed, but applications postmarked after that date will be set aside for future consideration. "I encourage New Yorkers who need affordable housing to regularly check our listings and sign up for our e-mail alerts," said Donovan. "Sending in an application could be the first step toward moving into a new, affordable home."
