Operation Move-In --Upper West Side Squatter Movement
here is an original poster from Operation Move-in -- a squatter movement that took place on the Upper West Side in the mid 1970's. Low-income and under housed families took over vacant city owned buildings to demonstrate their desperate need for housing. With support from local elected officials, community groups and religious institutions, the families were quickly given leases to remain in the apartments as rent paying tenants. Many of the buildings still remain today and are still providing affordable housing for low and moderate income families.
